So you have heard about the Anti Candida diet?
Maybe you have even bought an anti Candida diet book?

But it is not like the allowed foods are even the same for everyone – no. Some versions of the Anti Candida diet are far more lenient than others especially in stage one – so what gives?
And as for the supplements?
Don’t get me started!
Take this one at this time, that one at that time and for goodness sake don’t take those two together! Honestly do some of these people think that we’ve got nothing better to do with our days than sort out which pill we are suppose to take at what time?
If there is one thing that an Anti Candida diet is it is Confusing with a capital ‘C!’
Who needs the hassle?
OK, now that that is off our chest, let’s break this down nice and easy.
First up, you are doing the right thing by choosing an anti Candida diet.
The benefits that you will see from this will soon be apparent and imagine what life will be like at the end of it when you feel soooo much better than you do now!
The reason that it is all so confusing is because there is no such thing as a defined ‘Anti Candida Diet’. All we have is a way of eating that has removed the foods that the Candida fungus lives on. Some programs take it one step further and remove all foods that we could be sensitive to as well – so a large part of your success on the diet comes down to how far you want to go with it and what you are sensitive to.
Stage one of an anti Candida diet
Stage One is the first two to four weeks of the diet and it is this part that gets everyone in a spin. This is where we remove all sugars, mold, wheat, gluten, preservatives, starches, carbohydrates and dairy.
To put it simply – all you are allowed are leafy green vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, celery, cucumber, zucchini, silverbeet, peppers, chicken, fish, omega oils, nuts and seeds.

Contentious foods on stage one of an anti Candida diet
Now here’s where it gets confusing – some plans go on to say that you can also eat cottage cheese, natural yogurt, lean red meat, whole-grains and low sugar fruits like pineapple, papaya, pear, berries and rhubarb.
The best advice here is to go with what you feel is OK and do your best. I could not have lived without my dessertspoon of cottage cheese on my salad or on my rice crackers and flaxseed oil goes down far better if you take it with a spoonful of yogurt.
Dealing with stage one of an anti Candida diet
If you find that the thought of stopping all the food that you love in one swoop scary – then don’t. Just stop all sugar for a week. This is the main food source for the fungus so you will be doing some good. The next week then cut back the carbos and starches and carry on like this until you find that you have cut everything out that you need to. From there you can ‘start stage one proper’ and in no time you will be adding food back again!
How important is a food diary on an anti Candida diet?
A lot of emphasis in an anti Candida diet is put on how we react to certain foods when we reintroduce them, so it really helps to keep a food diary – this can outline which foods you have tried, when, if there was any reaction etc. You will also find that you need to take a few supplements while on the diet and these also need to be taken at certain times of the day, so a food diary helps to keep a record of this.
Cheating on an anti Candida diet
Oooh, this is a toughie. Here you are, trying to do your best when whammy, from out of nowhere you get ‘shouted’ a meal or your mother-in-law makes you a cake for afternoon tea or you get presented with a biscuit that your kids have made at school – what do you do?
Eat it.
Seriously, this is not worth losing relationships over and really, one slip up is not going to hurt, especially seeing as you are in this for the long haul!
You may have heard that you need to go right back to the start of stage one with every little slip, but I would ignore this. I see it as a ‘two steps forward and one step back moment’ – nothing more.
If you think it through logically, one biscuit may boost your Candida numbers slightly, but it will only be a temporary set back as they will soon die off again when the food stops!
Introducing foods back after stage one of an anti Candida diet
The fun part of any anti Candida diet is reintroducing those foods that you weren’t allowed before. The trick here is to do it really slowly – one serving of one food once a day. Note any reaction – even a raised heart rate counts as a negative – and remove any food that you react to. These can be tried again in another two weeks.
Start with really simple, easily digested foods – whole-grains, low sugar fruit, carrots, peas etc.

Being vegetarian on an anti Candida diet.
This is a toughie and one that you will have to decide for yourself on. The big issue is the amount of protein that you need to survive on vs which foods are feeding your Candida vs the amount of carbohydrates you are taking on.
This issue really deserves its own page, but I found this site which answers your questions really well. http://www.holistichelp.net/blog/candida-diet-and-vegetarians/
Cravings on an anti Candida diet
Cravings can be caused by many things – Candida, blood sugar imbalances, dehydration, protein deficiency, mineral deficiency, emotional needs, and food intolerances/ allergies. The best idea here is to question all cravings and ask yourself whether they really are a need or a ‘want’. If you decided that it is a ‘need’ then still wait 5 minutes before eating it – this usually works – believe me!
Socializing on an anti Candida diet
This is one of the hardest parts about being on an anti Candida diet.
You have two options – become a social recluse or deal with it the best that you can. When visiting friends, take rice crackers and hummus – these are actually really yummy and kosher to boot!
If you are headed to a party, make sure that you have a large meal before you go, that way you will be able to ignore the finger food on offer.
If you are invited out to dinner, ask about the type of restaurant you will be going to. Most dining places these days have a salad option or if not, then relax, go with the flow, enjoy yourself and deal with the consequences tomorrow!
With a bit of planning you can have the best of both worlds

Explaining an anti Candida diet;
If you don’t feel comfortable explaining why you are on this diet or can’t be bothered getting into it, then just call it a detox diet and leave it there. These days most people will just go ‘oh, OK’ and respect your wishes. If they want to know more then it is up to you how far you take it.
If they want to know “why?” then just shift the blame onto your doctor, naturopath, nutritionist, psychic, sister in law (who happens to be a nurse) or anyone else who has the authority to suggest that this may benefit you.
