The diet for Candida is a 3 step diet that will help you to eliminate the Candida in two ways;

1) In the initial stages the Candida is starved to death

2) There are many foods which we are sensitive to and these impact on our immune system. The diet for Candida helps us to identify these foods and eliminate them from our diet.

Step one of the diet for Candida

Step one is so important because this is where we stop feeding the Candida.

Unfortunately because it is the most important phase it also means that it can be the most difficult for some people. Just eliminating the foods that Candida feeds on can be hard enough without also taking out the foods that we could be sensitive to!

In a nutshell we are taking out food containing; sugar, carbohydrates (simple or otherwise), starch, yeast, mold, gluten, wheat or dairy. Fermented foods like soy sauce, vinegar and alcohol are also out.

Now I know that you probably think that this sounds like your average diet yada yada, but seriously, no sugar means NO SUGAR. At all.

This includes fruit, dried or otherwise, honey, raw sugar, brown sugar, artificial sweeteners…. If you really need sweetening, then stevia or Xylitol are good substitutes but do take some getting used to.

Other banned substances include;

  • Because starch converts to sugars when it is digested it is also banned. This includes potatoes, corn and peas.
  • Moldy foods are also out – like tomatoes, eggplants, cheeses, peanuts and cashews.
  • Other fungi like mushrooms are also obviously out!
  • Gluten
  • Wheat and
  • Dairy are self explanatory and usually well labeled.

The jury also seems to be out on whether whole grains are allowed in stage one of the Candida Cleanse Diet or not. I did not have them for the first four weeks, but did not react when they were re-introduced either. If you stop them at least for the first week or two, then it will be easy to tell if you are going to react to them when they are re-introduced.

You will get really good at reading labels!

The general rule here is if that there is doubt – avoid it or Google it!

It will take 2-4 weeks for step 1 to really have an impact.

Step 2 of the Diet for Candida

This is where we start to relax a bit and start re-introducing some foods, starting with some of your wholegrains like brown rice and moving slowly on from there.

A food diary is really handy at this point so that we can see if we react to any foods that are re-introduced.

Step 3 of the Diet for Candida

Yay! You made it, Step 3 is when you have returned to a full ‘normal’ menu. Most people that complete the diet for Candida actually find that they are really happy just to stick to a low carb, low sugar diet permanently. This still means that they get to enjoy those takeaways and pizzas occasionally though!

So what can we eat on a Diet for Candida?

Actually, anything with high fiber and low starch content is fine.

Stage one of the diet basically consists of vegetables – if it is green and leafy then you will be fine.

  • Think lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach, silverbeet, Brussels sprouts, celery…. Well, you get the drift.
  • Peppers are also OK.
  • As far as meat goes, the good news is that you can eat lean meat, chicken and fish.
  • Eggs are also OK in moderation.
  • Some say that gluten free whole grains are also OK at stage one
  • Omega oils – Essential fatty acids are really important
  • Some Candida Cleanse Diet programs say that small amounts of cottage cheese and unsweetened yogurt that contains live cultures are OK. (Truth be told, I would have gone mad without my dessertspoon of cottage cheese on my salad!)
  • As for drinks, water seems to be the only thing that everyone can agree on!
  • Coffee? Opinion is sooo divided here! If you are an addict then knock it back to one a day and you should be fine :o )

The good news is that by the time you have completed stage 1 of the diet for Candida you will be an expert and stage 2 will seem like a walk in the park!

How long do I need to be on the diet for Candida?

At least 6 weeks for mild cases, 6 months for moderate case and I have heard of people being on a diet for Candida for up to 2 years for advanced or systemic cases.

Once you have settled into your diet for Candida most people find that they continue to apply many parts of it to their regular diet.

Will the diet for Candida cure my infection?

This is the big question – you don’t want to be going to this trouble if it doesn’t work right?

The diet for Candida will certainly go a long way to eliminating the fungus and by identifying trigger foods you will help prevent a further infection. The addition of anti-fungal supplements will help you to eradicate the Candida faster (and get you off the diet faster!)

To heal from the damage done by the fungus and regain full health you need to add a regime of antifungal and nutritional supplements. These will help to heal tissue damage and help the liver and kidneys flush out the toxins left by the Candida.

If you want to know how it really works there is a blog written by someone who suffers from a variety of conditions including recurrent yeast infections. She is doing a complete Candida cure program, starting with the diet for Candida. Check out her progress!  The How To Cure Candida Experiment
