I know that it isn’t fair, but unfortunately in many cases yeast infection and pregnancy do go hand in hand and here’s why;

Yeast Infection and Pregnancy Catch #1; Hormonal changes

You know those hormones that are kicking in right about now? The ones that make you cry at television ads and laugh at little babies making bizarre noises?

Well these also have a part to play in the balance of good and bad bacteria in the body. In the normal body, all the fungi and bacteria play together nicely and everything is swell. Things can go a little haywire once a month for some gals, but mostly things just chug along.

Then comes a pregnancy and with it the massive flood of hormones required to develop a baby. The whole balance of bacteria gets thrown around and in many cases this actually encourages the Candida to break out of their controlled environment and start to seek new pastures.

Yeast Infection and Pregnancy Catch #2 – Lowered immunity

Your body instinctively programs the immune system to give your growing bub first priority – that’s fair enough, but unfortunately for you when the massive wave of hormones hits and the balance of bacteria is disturbed then you don’t have much defense against the Candida onslaught.

Yeast Infection and Pregnancy Catch #3 – Cravings

They are the subject of many a ‘war’ story. Who had the weirdest cravings during their pregnancy. Let me guess, sugary foods or foods that were full of refined carbohydrates? I had massive cravings for jelly beans with my first pregnancy – Can’t look at them now though!

Anyway, if you are suffering from these types of cravings then it may pay not to give in as these are the ideal foods for the yeast to grow on. It may even be the yeast infection that is influencing your cravings!

Yeast infection and Pregnancy Catch #4 – Stress

I know that it is not supposed to be this way, but pregnancy can also be a time of huge stress as you contemplate the life changes that are about to come. From the addition of a new baby and how to care for it, to financial, relationship and emotional concerns. Let’s not even think about the physical stress that your body is under!

Whether ‘good’ stress or ‘bad’, they all add stress to your system. Stress puts a huge strain on the already stretched immune system…………..

Yeast Infection and Pregnancy Catch #5 – Medical Intervention

The majority of you will probably end up having some sort of medical intervention, whether it is just having an antibiotic after baby is born or having a catheter inserted. Some will need more intervention than others as epidurals, spinals, forceps and even c-sections are required. These are not bad things! They are a ‘necessary evil’ and please do not reject any thought of them.

But be aware that they will compromise your immunity, and further disrupt your system, so be prepared to take precautions and stamp out any sign of a yeast infection immediately.

However having a yeast infection and pregnancy is not a sentence that you have to just ‘grin and bear’ for the remainder of your time. Many over-the-counter remedies may not be recommended for use during your pregnancy but there are a great range of natural home remedies that will help to relieve your symptoms – you may even have a few of them in your fridge now!

There are a couple of things to do once you think that you may have the symptoms of a yeast infection.

1) Talk to your midwife or health care provider. They will do tests that will confirm whether your symptoms are from a yeast infection or bacterial infection.

2) If it is a yeast infection then treat it with natural remedies.

3) Ensure that you do treat it because having a yeast infection and pregnancy means that you run the risk of passing it onto your baby either during the birthing process or when breast feeding or handling baby.
